Un pergamino inscrito con los personajes para “Hell” habría hecho que los espectadores reflexionaran sobre su conducta y la transiencia de los fenómenos mundanos. Este trabajo es un ejemplo llamativo de la caligrafía individualista favorecida en los círculos de Rinzai Zen y entre los anestes de té. Seigan Sōi, cuyo cepillo explosivo crea la impresión de un corte de hoja a través del papel, fue abad del templo Daitokuji en Kyoto.
