Esta pintura representa a Budai, una querida figura budista semihistórica conocida como Hotei en Japón. Aunque la obra se asoció tradicionalmente con un artista conocido como Ikei Shūtoku, supuestamente seguidor del célebre pintor de tinta medieval Sesshū Tōyō, se cree que fue hecha en el siglo XIX. Este trabajo tardío entró en la colección de The Met en 1914 junto con casi otras doscientas obras de arte japonesas y chinas de la colección de Charles Stewart Smith (1832-1909), un fideicomisario del Museo. Smith fue principalmente un coleccionista de pinturas europeas, pero también adquirió muchas obras de arte japonesas y chinas durante las últimas dos décadas de su vida, después de que él y su tercera esposa luna de miel en Japón en 1892.
