Este panel es de un importante retablo portátil de cinco partes que posiblemente fue encargado por el órgano rector de la ciudad de Siena. Junto con Giotto, Simone fue el artista más famoso de su día. Su técnica refinada y sus poderes descriptivos, evidentes en la expresión de san Andrés y en la forma en que sostiene su libro, fueron desiguales en Europa y ganaron la alabanza y amistad del poeta Petrarca (1304-1374). El marco rectangular es original.
