En la mitología griega, la ninfa Hesperia era uno de los Hesperides cuya tarea era cuidar el jardín de los dioses y con la ayuda de un dragón guarda un árbol que produjo manzanas doradas. Este acuarela es una pequeña obra de una pintura al óleo que Frank Dicksee exhibió en la Real Academia en 1887. El artista, que fue enseñado por Lord Leighton y Sir John Everett Millais, logró un éxito oficial considerable y fue mejor conocido por sus románticas imágenes históricas que continuaron la tradición figurativa de los Pre-Raphaelites bien en la era eduardo.
