Guthrie se estableció en Cockburnspath en mayo de 1883. El pueblo y el campo circundante le permitieron pintar el paisaje al aire libre, y trató de formar una colonia de artistas en el pueblo de Berwickshire, al igual que sus compatriotas franceses habían establecido en Barbizon y Grez-sur-Loing. La mayoría de los niños de Glasgow residían aquí por breves hechizos entre 1883 y 1886. Durante los meses de verano era habitual ver artistas agitados por todo el pueblo con sus caballetes colocados debajo de grandes paraguas.
