3 de marzo 1855 La reina Victoria y el príncipe Alberto, acompañados por el príncipe de Gales y el príncipe Alfred, visitaron el hospital militar de Fort Pitt, Chatham. They met some of the 450 soldiers who had returned there from the Crimea. La Reina escribió más tarde al Señor Panmure, Secretario de Guerra, criticando los edificios con sus ventanas altas, pequeñas salas, y la falta de un comedor, "para que los hombres pobres tengan sus cenas en la misma habitación en la que duermen, y en la que algunos pueden estar muriendo".
