La ambiciosa pintura de Reynolds del célebre actor David Garrick fue una de las más importantes de su carrera. El tema era probablemente la propia idea de Garrick: una parodia lúdica de la historia clásica de Hércules eligiendo entre placer y virtud, diseñada para enfatizar la versatilidad de Garrick. Reynolds presenta las figuras de Comedia y Tragedia al estilo de Antonio Correggio y Guido Reni. Correggio era conocido por su uso seductor del color, Reni para las estrictas de la línea.
