Charles William Ross fue el miniaturista inglés más importante del siglo XIX. Sus patronos incluyeron el Tribunal Real de Inglaterra y la mayoría de las aristocracias y clases medias, así como varios grandes nombres de familias reales europeas. En 1837 fue nombrado pintor de retratos a la reina Victoria y fue caballero en 1843. Esta miniatura muestra a Leslie Ward, con un romero en la mano, y su sis-ter. Leslie era un famoso caricaturista bajo el pseudonym Spy: en 1873 comenzó a trabajar para Vanity Fair, e hizo 2300 caricaturas.
