Su Shi, también conocido por su nombre de cortesía Zizhan y nombre literario Dongpojushi, nació en Meishan, provincia de Sichuan. Pasó el examen imperial en el periodo Jiayou. Luego sirvió como gobernador de varios lugares, incluyendo Hangzhou y Yingzhou, y la posición más alta que asumió fue el preidente de Li Bu. Ministerio de Rites. Su fue reconocido como uno de los Tres Sus junto con su padre Su Xun y su hermano menor Su Zhe y también uno de los Escritores de la Gran Prosa de las Dinastías Tang y Song debido a sus logros en la literatura. Exceleró el guión y el guión regular, imitando los estilos de Li Yong, Xu Hao, Yan Zhenqing y Yang Ningshi, y luego creó su propio estilo. Su cepillo es redondo, rico y lleno de cambios, pero con un toque de inocencia y brillantez. Fue reconocido como el “Four Calligraphers of the Song Dynasty” junto con Cai Xiang, Huang Tingjian y Mi Fu. Su también era bueno en la pintura de bambús, y defendió un estándar llamado "semblance interior" (shensi) en la apreciación de las pinturas.
