Susan Macdowell, ex estudiante de Thomas Eakins en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pensilvania, se casó con él en 1884. Principalmente una retratista, con frecuencia retrató a miembros de la familia en entornos interiores. Su modelo aquí pudo haber sido su hermana Elizabeth, cuyo futuro esposo aparecería como "El Pensador" en 1900 (17.172). El abanico que descansa sobre la mesa refleja el interés de Susan Eakins en el arte japonés, que también es señalizado por el libro de impresiones que tiene en el retrato de su marido (23.139). Después de su matrimonio, Susan Eakins dejó de pintar para dedicarse a ayudar a su esposo y, más tarde, establecer su reputación.
