Japón fue cerrado al comercio con Occidente hasta 1854, y no fue hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XIX que la decoración japonesa se convirtió en una poderosa influencia en el diseño europeo y americano. Los vasos fueron adquiridos probablemente por los Fricks en los años 1880. Están adornados con gorriones voladores y cayendo hojas de arce japonesas en la parte delantera y telas de araña e insectos en la espalda.
