Sōhei, nacido en una familia mercante en Bungo-han (actual Prefectura de Oita), comenzó a estudiar a los diecinueve años con el pintor de Nanga Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835). Sōhei era conocido por su estilo de pintura altamente individual. Para el siglo XIX, la cultura literati confuciana floreció entre todas las clases en Japón; el fermento de las ideas y la expresión que promovió condujo al levantamiento político a mediados del siglo que creó el estado de Meiji.
