Gracias a la similitud de las palabras, la combinación visual de roble (bai en chino y haku en japonés) y ciervo (lu en chino y roku en japonés) transmitió deseos para un alto salario (literalmente, ‘uno cien’). El tema había sido popularizado en Japón por Shen Nanping, pintor chino que vivió y enseñó en Nagasaki durante la década de 1730.
