Tanaka terminó la prefectura de Saitama Urawa High School en 1904. Viajó solo a Seattle, donde estudió pintura y se convirtió en artista. Sus pinturas desnudas atraían especial atención. En 1920, se trasladó a París con su esposa y estuvo activo en el Salón d’Automne y otras exposiciones celebradas periódicamente. Murió en París sin volver a Japón desde que abandonó su patria.
