Rousseau realizó frecuentes expediciones de bosquejo en las provincias francesas. En 1844, junto con el paisajista Jules Dupré (1811-1889), visitó la región de Landes en el suroeste, donde hizo obras distintivas para su observación penetrante y su ejecución cuidadosa. Este lienzo podría haber sido pintado más adelante en los años 1840 o en los años 1850. En la última década, Rousseau arrojó a planos distantes en tiras paralelas, un dispositivo compositivo que llamó "planimétrico".
