En 1844, Rousseau visitó la región de Landes del suroeste de Francia, cuyo terreno plano pudo haber inspirado el campo representado aquí. El paisaje recuerda las llanuras abiertas y los cielos amplios que había admirado durante mucho tiempo en la pintura holandesa del siglo XVII. El barquero y el camino que conduce a la granja entre los árboles indican que este es un lugar rústico, si no bastante salvaje.
