Hacia el final de su vida, Ribot, que fue fuertemente influenciado por pintores españoles del siglo XVII, especialmente Ribera, trajo un realismo vigoroso y una predilección por valores contrastantes al tema de los campesinos bretones y normandos. A partir de los años 1870, pintó varios retratos de grupo similares a éste.
