Theo van Doesburg comenzó su carrera como artista autodidacta. Sus primeros paisajes y retratos, pintados antes de 1915, manifiestan la influencia del expresionismo alemán, y ante todo Wassily Kandinsky. Desde su juventud, se dedicaba a cuestiones teóricas relacionadas con la pintura, y planeó el lanzamiento de una revista de arte ya a mediados de los años 10. Finalmente publicó el periódico, De Stijl, en noviembre de 1917 con sus amigos de mente similar, Piet Mondrian, Bart van der Leck y el húngaro Vilmos Huszár, que continuó existiendo gracias a Doesburg
