Theodor Wende se hizo un »goldsmith entre épocas«. Stubbornly indepent, he worked for several years at the Mathildenhöhe artsts’ colony in Darmstadt before accepting an appointment to teaching at the Pforzheim Kunstgewerbeschule. Wende fue igualmente exitoso como profesor y como artista independiente. Su joyería, que casi nunca fue suprimida al dictado de un estilo o movimiento particular, fue apreciada en los círculos de Pforzheim que eran receptivos a nuevas ideas y en cualquier caso aclamó ampliamente más allá de esa ciudad. Aunque todavía está en Darmstadt, desarrolló un estilo muy individual, cuyas posibilidades siguió explorando y consolidando formalmente. Con la sofisticada decoración tridimensional típica de la obra de Wende, el tercio superior del colgante en forma de escutcheón se establece con aquarmarina facetada.
