Depictions of American scenery always served as a backdrop for Thomas Cole’s storytelling. En este paraíso-como, valle lleno de sol, una familia parece vivir en armonía con la naturaleza. La pintura presenta una escena de buena fortuna: un padre y un hijo que son recibidos de una exitosa caza. La narrativa encantadora es sólo una parte del significado de la obra, sin embargo. La pintura de Cole imparte una lección moral: el asentamiento y la marcha de la civilización llegan a un precio pronunciado: la inmundicia de la naturaleza intacta, aquí representada por la abundancia de árboles caídos en primer plano.
