Se han propuesto varias identidades para el joven rico vestido en este retrato, pero ninguna con certeza. Sin embargo, el retrato parece haber sido bien conocido, al menos en el siglo XVII; Carlo Dolci incluyó una copia de la figura en el fondo de su martirio de San Andrés (Palazzo Pitti, Florencia). La pintura generalmente se considera una obra temprana de Titian. El estado de ánimo contemplativo del sujeto y el difundido y suave juego de luz sobre las superficies ampliamente pintadas son muy reminiscentes de Giorgione contemporáneo de Titian. El lienzo ha sido atribuido en el pasado a Giorgione. De humor, pose y técnica, el retrato de Frick se asemeja estrechamente a la figura central del concierto (Palazzo Pitti), una pintura que también se ha atribuido tanto a Titian como a Giorgione.
