A pesar de muchos intentos especulativos, se desconoce la identidad del sitter. Titian presenta su niñera de una manera imponente como un dignitario cuyo rostro, con su mirada penetrante, no traiciona a un cabrón de emoción. La gravedad de la presentación se da un contrapeso sorprendentemente lírico en la forma del paisaje nocturno a la izquierda. El artista ha trabajado aquí con pinceladas abiertas, más difusas, que en lugares permiten que el suelo gris aparezca. Titian iba a hacer un uso amplio de este método en su trabajo tardío, incluso en la medida de aplicar pintura con sus dedos.
