Titian nunca vio a Francisco I, el rey de Francia (1494-1547). Sin embargo, logró pintar un impresionante retrato de un gobernante. El modelo de su retrato fue una medalla hecha por Benvenuto Cellini, mostrando al rey en perfil. La postura erecta, torso amplio y magníficas prendas dan al retrato un aire real. El sombrero plano con sus delicadas plumas, junto con su cabello fino, que se cepilla a través de su cara de una manera similar pluma, dan cierta ligereza al retrato real de lo contrario muy orgulloso.
