Ismael fue el primer hijo de Abraham y su madre fue Hagar, la sierva egipcia de Sara. Cuando el hijo de Sara, Isaac nació Ismael se burlaba de su hermano menor para que Sara le pidiera a Abraham que lo destierra junto con su madre. Abraham les proporcionó pan y una botella de agua y los envió al desierto de Beerseba. Cuando el agua fue gastada Hagar puso a Ishmael bajo un arbusto para morir y luego se sentó de alguna manera, llorando. Pero un ángel apareció y reveló un pozo de agua cerca, así que ambos fueron salvados. La escena de la aparición del ángel era común en la pintura italiana y holandesa del siglo XVII.
