Titian se convirtió en el pintor oficial de Venecia en 1516. Pintó un retrato de serie de todos los perros - así de Doge Trevisani - para la Sala del Maggior Consiglio en el Palazzo Ducale. Estos retratos fueron destruidos por el fuego en 1577. Titian generalmente ejecutó una o más versiones de los retratos oficiales. Esta pintura en el museo de Budapest se cree que es una versión del retrato oficial de Trevisani hecho por el propio Titian.
