Ugolino di Nerio fue uno de los pintores más importantes de Siena y Florencia a principios del siglo XIV. Recibió prestigiosas comisiones para iglesias y este pequeño trabajo era probablemente parte de un gran retablo que producía, ahora desmantelado. Habría sido uno de una serie de paneles que formaron su base pintada, llamada predella. El fraile carmelita arrodillado (identificable por su capa blanca), la mujer y el joven representado aquí podrían ser los donantes que encargaron el retablo.
