El cartel de la tienda de té dice "Nuestro famoso Tororo-jiru", y Maruko fue famoso por su toro-jiru, o sopa de yam rallada. El poeta Basho incluso compuso un haiku sobre este lugar: ume wakana / maruko no shuku no / toro-jiru (joven hojas de ciruela / la estación en Maruko / sopa de yam rallado). Dos hombres son representados comiendo toro-jiru, se cree que son Yajirobei y Kitahachi del cuento de viaje cómico Tokaidochu Hizakurige de Jippensha Ikku (traducido al inglés como The Shank's Mare).
