El precursor bíblico de Jesús parece dirigir su mensaje — "He aquí el cordero de Dios"— al espectador mientras indica el cordero, un emblema de Cristo. La figura es casi sin duda un autorretrato (conocerá sus características moustached como Sansón en la última galería) y fue claramente pintado de un espejo, de donde la intensidad de la mirada escrutadora. La razón principal para salir temprano de este trabajo es el naturalismo sin igual, como los pliegues de la cortina, que Valentín pronto aprendió a modificar en interés de una mayor coherencia y sofisticación estilística.
