El apóstol Bartolomé fue brutalmente martirizado por ser desolado vivo. La deuda de Valentin con el hiperrealismo detallado que se encuentra en las pinturas de Cecco del Caravaggio fue motivada por su deseo de obtener una respuesta perturbadoramente emotiva a este horrible acontecimiento. Los contemporáneos conocedores habrían admirado la forma en que Valentin individualizó las tareas contrastantes de los verdugos para crear un efecto de variedad, así como la impresión de una actividad en curso. Pero es el realismo gráfico que más impresiona.
