Commissionato dal Comune di Orzinuovi come ex voto per la cessazione della peste, lo Stendardo rappresenta l’esito estremo dell’opera di Vincenzo Foppa. Ne è dimostrazione l’approdo del gradotore ai cosiddetti “grigi” dei volti, en di “velare, avvolgere, abbassare tutta la gamma” del dipinto (Longhi). Le figure, specialmente nel verso con i tre santi protettori contro la peste, rivelano appieno la sensibilità umana e devozionale di Foppa, che, rinunciando a ogni artificio, intraprende una disarmante indagine sulla realtà: così nelle ricerche sulla luce, nelle forme Clicca sull’icona in alto a destra per scoprire il verso dello stendardo!
