La terracota de Pacetti, representando a Aquiles y Penthesilea, ganó el premio Concorso Balestra en 1773. El tema del concurso, organizado por Anton Raphael Mengs, fue la muerte de Penthesilea. El artista ha puesto al grupo en una dramática base rocosa, los patos de los protagonistas acentuados por la diagonal del brazo de Aquiles mientras lucha por sostener el cuerpo sin vida de Penthesilea, y por el manto del héroe que, aún hinchado con viento, indicios de la batalla acaba de terminar
