Un nativo de Lille, Vaillant entrenado en Amberes y a mediados de los años 1650 fue bien establecido como retratista en Amsterdam. El artista también se conoce como pionero del grabado de mezzotint. En los retratos holandés y flamenco, los halcones suelen referirse a la caza como deporte aristocrático.
