Se cree que Matisse usó a su esposa como modelo para esta pintura, que garnered much negative criticism cuando se exhibió en el Salón D’Automne, en 1905. Fue esta exposición que el término “fauve”, que se traduce en “wild” o “beastly”, fue acuñado, por el crítico de arte Louis Vauxcelles, quien se refirió a las pinturas como bestia, un comentario que fue impreso en un periódico público y libremente arrojado en público.
