Tras la creación de secesiones en Munich, Viena y Düsseldorf, en 1898 se fundó la Secesión de Berlín. El pintor Walter Leistikow jugó un papel importante en este asunto. Como excelente redista, sabía reunir a otros artistas para formar una nueva institución que organizaba sus propias exposiciones. Cada tendencia artística debía tener su lugar y simplemente la calidad de la pintura era esencial. Un nuevo edificio de exposiciones fue construido en apenas dos meses en el distrito Charlottenburg. La Secesión de Berlín también exhibió pintores impresionistas franceses. Pronto, las exposiciones se convirtieron en los eventos artísticos más importantes de la capital.
