Wang Jian, también conocido por su nombre de cortesía Yuanzhao, y sus nombres literarios Xiangbi y Ranxiang’anzhu, nació en Taicang. Era el bisnieto de Wang Shizhen. Siendo juren (un segundo grado o un candidato exitoso en el Examen Provincial), sirvió como Gobernador de Lianzhou en el reinado del Emperador Chongzhen. Se negó a asumir cualquier posición en el gobierno en la dinastía Qing. Especializando en el paisaje, Wang fue influenciado por Dong Qichang y fuertemente empleado los estilos en los períodos Song y Yuan. Sus pinturas son grandes con un toque de elegancia antigua, y su uso de tinta y pincel es meticuloso, refinado y elegante. Fue reconocido como uno de los “Four Wangs” – los cuatro destacados pintores de paisaje en la dinastía Qing temprano – junto con Wang Shimin, Wang Hui y Wang Yuanqi.
