Como joven, Wang Xuehao estudió con un nieto de Wang Yuanqi, que lo entrenaba en los elementos que hacían tan amado el anciano Wang: agitación suelta, jugadas atrevidas de sólido y vacío, y una arrogancia estudiada de la línea que de alguna manera nunca se apartó de la elegancia. Wang Xuehao, como sus mentores ante él, estaba particularmente interesado en el pintor del siglo XIV Huang Gongwang, cuya manera interpreta aquí.
