Aunque una vez un conocido Rembrandt, ahora hay un fuerte consenso de que este lienzo fue pintado alrededor de 1654–55 por su alumno, Willem Drost (1633–1659). El tipo femenino, el dibujo de las características faciales, y la ejecución pintoresca del traje son características de Drost. El tema (que es raro en el norte de Europa) y la composición parecen haber sido inspirados por un ejemplo italiano reciente como Domenichino's Cumaean Sibyl de 1616-17 en la Galleria Borghese, Roma. Drost trabajó en Italia desde 1655 hasta su muerte temprana.
