En las tierras germánicas durante el siglo XVIII, y en Flandes por el XVII, el púlpito se había convertido en un vehículo iconográfico para expresar la verdad de la Fe en figuras cuyo estilo fue tomado de la elocuencia del predicador. De hecho, el púlpito se llamaba la "presidencia de vérité". En Francia el sermón fue cultivado como un género literario.
