Famoso como pintor de veleros, paisajes marinos y escenas del Ártico, Bradford viajó ampliamente como artista. Entre 1877 y 1881, visitó el Valle del Yosemite al menos seis veces para realizar estudios de vistas a la victoria y la zona montañosa de Sierra Nevada en California. Esta pintura muestra una vista desde el borde occidental del valle hacia la famosa forma de granito, parcialmente oscura por las nubes. A la izquierda está El Capitan, el mayor monolito de granito del mundo. En el centro derecho están las rocas de la catedral y una caída de Bridalveil congelada.
