Como muchos otros escultores americanos que trabajan en el estilo neoclásico, William Henry Rinehart dibujó el tema para sus esculturas compañeras de Hero (aquí) y Leander (86.513) de la mitología antigua. Como dijo el poeta romano Ovid, los amantes de la estrella vivieron en los lados opuestos del Hellespont, el estrecho cuerpo de agua que separa a Turquía y Grecia modernos. Cada noche Leander nadaría el Hellespont para estar con Hero, que lo guiaba con su lámpara. Pero una noche tormentosa su lámpara explotó, y Leander perdió su camino y se ahogó. Sobrevivió con dolor, Hero se lanzó al mar y se ahogó. Su historia melancólica fue popular entre las audiencias victorianas de Rinehart
