Müller viajó a Egipto en 1838 y Asia Menor en 1841, pero probablemente pintó este boceto después, en Londres. Allí fue miembro del Grupo Clipstone, un grupo de artistas que operaron un estudio improvisado donde los modelos estaban comprometidos con fines de estudio. Este trabajo puede derivarse de una de esas sesiones y podría representar a un actor, posiblemente en el papel de Othello.
