Bessie Potter (1872-1955) nació en Saint Louis y estudió en Chicago. Se ganó una reputación de escultor de estatuillas en bronce que retratan temas femeninos íntimos. En 1899 se casó con la pintora Robert Vonnoh y vivió en Nueva York, donde ella y su esposo conocían sin duda a Chase. En este retrato, Chase captura la personalidad sensible pero reservada de Potter. Su pose y el suave turbante que lleva recuerdan a aquellos en un autorretrato (1790; Uffizi, Florencia) del pintor francés Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842), a quien Potter aparentemente admiraba.
