Chase y su esposa, Alice, tuvieron ocho hijos, todos los cuales aparecieron en los retratos y estudios de figuras del artista. Este retrato es de Roland Dana Chase (1901-1980), el hijo menor de Chases. Escribiendo en "Harper"s Weekly" en 1901, un crítico aplaudió: "Witness el retrato de "Roland", que se representa con espléndido trabajo de pincel como un pícaro marrón enrollador, sosteniendo en su admirable mano de bebé la única nota de color, una bola roja".
