Tennessee Celeste Claflin, hermana de la famosa Victoria Woodhull, era una adivina, "tabla-rapper", corredor de bolsa, periodista y sanador. Abogó por la plataforma Free Love: el derecho a casarse, divorciarse y a tener hijos sin injerencia gubernamental. Como niña, “Tennie” practicaba clarividencia en el programa de medicina de su familia. En 1868 se convirtió en la sanadora magnética del millonario de Nueva York Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877). Con el respaldo de Vanderbilt, Tennie y Victoria fundaron la primera empresa de corretaje de Wall Street femenina. El viejo Vanderbilt prometió casarse con Tennie. Cuando murió en 1877, Tennessee aceptó una orden de 100.000 dólares de la familia Vanderbilt por prometer que no impugnaría su voluntad.
