Una figura central entre la segunda generación de artistas de la escuela del río Hudson, Haseltine nació en una familia de artistas, incluyendo a su madre y a sus hermanos. Se mudó a Roma, Italia, en 1869 y viajó por toda Europa. Tomó viajes de bosquejo a Venecia regularmente desde principios de 1870 hasta finales de 1890. Aquí, muestra una vista panorámica de la ciudad, con la Basílica de Santa Maria delle Salute visible tras los barcos pesqueros.
