Conocido en los años 1860 por sus pinturas por excelencia americanas de la costa de Nueva Inglaterra, William Haseltine se había mudado permanentemente a Europa. Había estado en Europa antes, estudiando en los años 1850 en Dusseldorf junto con otros estadounidenses Albert Bierstadt (1830 - 1902) y T. Worthington Whittredge (1820 - 1910).
