María Sutherland (circa 1782-1850) fue hija de Margaret y Daniel Sutherland. Los Sutherlands eran amigos de Berczy que había practicado su arte ampliamente en Europa. María lleva un vestido de Imperio-waista, un sello distintivo del neoclásico. La diferencia entre su vestido y el usado por su madre, Margaret, en su retrato de 1792, revela el notable cambio de moda en poco más de una década. María eventualmente se casaría con James Hallowell (1778-1816) quien, como su padre, estaba fuertemente invertido en el comercio de pieles.
