Inspirado por el Triumph de Julio César por Andrea Mantegna (Londres, Hampton Court, Royal Collection) la construcción rigurosa de la cual es reinterpretada por Rubens con la vitalidad del barroco, este cuadro fue adquirido en 1686 por Cosimo III con su colgante, Triumphal Entrada de Enrique IV en París. Aunque ambos quedaron incompletos, constituyen las partes más importantes de la serie de pinturas monumentales (1627-30) que narran la vida de Enrique IV de Francia.
