El padre Jan Neyen era un hombre importante en la historia de Holanda. Fue comisionado general de seis provincias de la Orden de los Frailes Menores en los Países Bajos y el Imperio Alemán. In 1607, he was sent by Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella to The Hague, to represent the Southern Netherlands in the negotiations with the Republic. Estas conversaciones finalmente llevaron, el 9 de abril de 1609, a los Doce Años Truza; una tregua durante la Guerra de los Ocho Años. Según un viejo documento que estaba en el reverso de la pintura, el retrato data de 1607, cuando Neyen tenía unos 37 años.
