Peter Paul Rubens hizo este gran boceto en preparación para la pintura a la izquierda. Aunque la composición final cambió significativamente, algunos elementos clave ya están presentes aquí: los hombres que ayudan a Pablo en primer plano; la figura que restringe su caballo; y el perro asustado junto a ellos. Pintado rápidamente, el boceto permitió a Rubens a recortar las ideas iniciales. Estos fueron desarrollados posteriormente en un gran dibujo, también en The Courtauld. Después de completar La Conversión de San Pablo, Rubens mantuvo tanto el dibujo como el dibujo en su estudio como posibles modelos para futuras obras.
